These antibiotics were seen to be effective in eradicating the condition and its associated symptoms in two or three week’s time. However, there is a higher relapse of bacterial vaginosis from using antibiotic treatment.
About 90% of BV sufferers get relief from using antibiotic treatments, but over 50% experience reoccurrence in few weeks time. Thus, antibiotic treatments are view not as a permanent, long lasting solution for treating bacterial vaginosis.
Taking antibiotics for BV cure will just result to the killing of most bacteria in your vagina, including the beneficial one. In effect, you are relieved from BV and its symptoms after both beneficial and harmful bacteria in your vagina is eradicated.
Killing the beneficial bacteria are the biggest drawback of using antibiotics because these beneficial bacteria help control the proliferation of bad bacteria. Without them, there is a higher tendency to have another overgrowth of bad bacteria resulting to BV reoccurrence.
With such short coming, alternative treatments are gaining popularity in BV sufferer. One promising alternative is by using probiotics. Probiotics treatment introduces beneficial bacteria in your system to reinforce numbers of beneficial bacteria controlling the proliferation of bad bacteria.
Wanting to get the benefit of both world of treatment, there is a study conducted by Cochrane Systematic Review that says taking lactobacillus tablets alongside with antibiotic therapy increases effectiveness of treating BV over taking antibiotic alone. However, the same study mentioned that intra-vaginal lactobacillus was as effective as taking antibiotics.
So, if this is the case, why should one take the combination? Besides, taking antibiotics with probiotics do not spare you from getting the unwanted side effects of antibiotics. By: Ruben Mind
