It just amazes me to see how many people are treated like pure rubbish at work day in day out, to the point where they’re in physical danger yet completely unaware of the occupational health laws in place to protect us against unfair dismissal and lack of sick pay. It doesn’t matter if we’re in a recession or not – work environments need to be safe in order for people to be employed in them, it’s as simple as that.

I think that most companies should seriously get a grip about occupational health and understand that members of staff are human beings and not cattle. We can’t be expected to trudge into work with runny noses, dry coughs and bad fevers. It affects everyone else for a start – the looks I see on the tube if some poor doll has a cold – you are literally witch hunted off the train these days if you so much as sneeze. Yet, many people can sit at work with a runny nose, sore throat, sweats and shivers, with not so much as an “are you okay” from their boss. Occupational health has a definite place in the work place. It’s not just about falling off a ladder or uneven floorboards – we are all affected by it and I just wonder how much of this is going amiss because of a recession caused by the healthy pocketed bankers who, while the rest of us are coughing and wheezing away, probably have no trouble getting to sleep at night.

Whether you were in favor of universal healthcare or dead set against it, you’re probably glad the debate is over and anxious to see what the future will bring. Changes will likely come in somewhat slowly, mostly over the next 4 years, and hopefully many will be for the good of most Americans. Here are four ways we predict it will change our hospitals.

Emergency rooms should be less crowded. People with no insurance often use the emergency room rather than regular doctor visits, because they put off health issues until they become severe. Once everyone is covered by regular health insurance, people will likely be seeking medical treatment sooner rather than later, making emergency rooms truly for emergencies.
Hospitals should have fewer write offs. Each year, hospitals must budget for write offs to cover patient charges that go unpaid. Largely, these written off amounts are for people who do not have health insurance. So, theoretically, anyway, hospitals should see lower costs when everyone has health insurance, because they should have fewer write offs.
Every hospital may not offer every service. We may see less competition among hospitals. This means that every hospital will not feel the need to offer every procedure or high tech medical tests. Not having to buy all the latest and greatest equipment can help them control capital expenditures. So, you may find in the future that one of your local hospitals is the place to go for the latest heart test, while another is the place to go for the latest cancer tests.
Over time, hospitals should see fewer admissions overall, and may need to focus more on outpatient care. Again, in theory, when people have insurance, they should be more proactive about taking care of themselves. Illnesses should be caught earlier on, reducing the number of hospital admissions for serious illnesses and procedures over all.

Many of the effects of healthcare reform are hard to predict. But, we can all hopefully look forward to better medical care once we all have healthcare insurance available.
