7 Things You Probably Didn?t Know About Breasts: Quick Facts About Breast Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, there were more than 2.5 million women in 2006 who had a history of any type of breast cancer, and have managed to survive the ordeal.

To give you an idea about just how serious this disease is, take a look at some other statistics:

- Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer (next to lung cancer) in both men and women.

- Breast cancer is the 5th most common cause of cancer-related deaths.

- Breast cancer is 100 times more frequent in women than in men – although the survival rate is equal in both sexes.

As you may already know, breast cancer is a type of cancer which starts in the cells of the breasts in both men and women. Although it does occur more frequently in women, the severity of the illness is just as serious where men are concerned.

Here, we will try to learn a few more things about women’s breasts that you may not necessarily have known about. How do these facts about women’s breasts affect the probability of having breast cancer? Read on to find out.

7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know about Breasts

As mentioned earlier, what we will provide you with is a list of the top 7 things that you probably didn’t know about breasts.

Half of these facts do not necessarily have anything to do with breast cancer, but half of them are related to the incidence of this serious disease. Take a look at the following list:

1. A woman’s breasts swell during sex.

Traditionally, a woman’s breasts represent her femininity and it’s also a symbol of motherhood. Now, if you are tangling the sheets with your significant other, do you feel as if your breasts are swelling when you are already sexually aroused? There is a basis to this and it actually does in fact physically swell.

According to the British Medical Journal, women do experience up to 25% of swelling in their breasts when they are indulging in sexual activity. This is caused by the feeling of arousal and the hormonal surge in a woman’s body. In addition, swollen breasts become the body’s natural way of boosting its seductive powers from a man’s point of view.

2. Breastfeeding can actually help you lose weight.

Whether you’re a first-time, second-time or third-time mom, you will notice significant changes in your body during your entire pregnancy – especially when it comes to your breasts.

During the pregnancy stage, the breasts become larger in size due to lactation.

But did you know that if you do go for breastfeeding over feeding your baby with formula milk, it can actually help you lose weight? [<a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.womenhealthzone.com/womens-health/is-breastfeeding-for-your-baby-advantageous-or-disadvantageous/” target=”_blank” title=”Breastfeeding benefits”>Breastfeeding benefits]

According to the studies conducted by Dewey, Heinig and Nommsen of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women who breastfeed from about three to six months have experienced a significant amount of fat loss in their own bodies. The weight loss may continue six months after your baby is born.

3. Women who are 50 years and up have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Perhaps the number one reason why there are fewer and fewer deaths associated with breast cancer is awareness on the part of the general women’s population. [<a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.womenhealthzone.com/womens-health/breast-cancer-awareness-to-detect-the-tumor-in-the-breast-at-an-early-stage/” target=”_blank” title=”Breast cancer awareness”>Breast cancer awareness]

Early diagnosis is actually the number one preventive measure that can be taken to fight death caused by breast cancer. So the earlier the condition is detected, the better the chances of survival rate.

But did you know that as you age, you would have a higher risk of developing the big C on your breasts? This is due to the fact that as women age, cellular mutation is on an increasing pattern.

Whether or not you have a family history of breast cancer, you should be more concerned about the possibility of developing the disease by the time that you hit your 50’s.

4. Consuming milk may actually lead to breast cancer.

Sure, giving your milk to your baby when you are lactating may help you lose weight – but did you know that consuming milk yourself may actually lead to breast cancer?

The types of milk which are on the safe side include rice milk, goat’s milk and almond milk.

On the other hand, those which are highly suspected of causing breast cancer include soy milk which contains isoflavones.

This is a plant-like estrogen which imitates the estrogen in humans – so drinking a lot of soy milk is not recommended by the experts.

If you have breast cancer, the goal is to keep the estrogen level low, and the recommended intake of isoflavones is only about 100 milligrams a day.

5. The healthier you are, the better it would be for the health of your breasts.

These days, it is quite easy to succumb into leading a sedentary lifestyle because everything seems to be easily within reach. There seems to be a link between obesity and breast cancer – which is exactly the reason why you should try to remain as healthy as you can for the benefit of your breast health and also your overall health.

Eating a lot of fruits and veggies, foods with antioxidants and having a proper exercise and diet program are the preventive measures that you can apply to prevent having breast cancer in the future. [Breast cancer diet]

Another way to live a cancer-free life is by avoiding alcohol as much as you can. There may be just a tiny link connecting these two – but the link is there just the same.

6. Women who religiously self-examine their breasts are no less likely to die of breast cancer, as compared to women who do not perform a breast self exam.

For the longest time now, women have been lead to believe that they should conduct a breast self exam every month.

A few years ago, the American Cancer Society has already tagged self-breast exams as being optional rather than a necessity.

A new way of doing things is with TLC or touch, look and check. This is the new rule of thumb that you need to live by, according to the British breast cancer foundation called Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

What you need to do is be aware of how your breasts feel normally. The minute that you feel a change, track it and if it does not go away, that is the time that you should seek the help of your doctor.

7. Wearing an underwire bra may be one of the many causes of breast cancer.

Sure, there are a lot of myths about how carcinogens are highly suspected when it comes to being the reasons for developing breast cancer. But the one thing which you may be doing on a regular basis that can actually cause such a disease to develop is wearing underwire bras.

Basically, in order for you to prevent cancer from happening, you do need to have a healthy lymphatic system. When you wear bras which have underwire in them, the circulation of the blood in the armpit area gets cut off.

As a result, your lymph nodes cannot properly eliminate the cancer-causing waste materials accumulated in the body – and this could be one of the reasons why your underwire bra is highly suspected when it comes to breast cancer development.

Now that you already have an idea about some of the common and not-so-common things that you know about a woman’s breasts, you can take the precautionary measures in order to prevent breast cancer from developing in your body.

All in all, early detection of breast cancer, taking precautionary measures and being aware of the changes in your body are the things that you need to be armed with, if you want to win the fight against breast cancer.

I usually only do these when the mood strikes me, but I’ve been thinking about this project for a week or more now thanks to zebra.paperclip’s piece I Don’t Know Where Your Heart Went .

These hearts are truly pink, although more so in-person! I made them intentionally for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast Cancer

http://bilalhealthclinic.com/breastcancer.html

Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the breast, usually in the inner lining of the milk ducts or lobules. There are different types of breast cancer, with different stages (spread), aggressiveness, and genetic makeup. With best treatment, 10-year disease-free survival varies from 98% to 10%. Treatment includes surgery, drugs (hormone therapy and chemotherapy), and radiation.

Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer (10.4% of all cancer incidence, both sexes counted)[ and the fifth most common cause of cancer death. In 2004, breast cancer caused 519,000 deaths worldwide (7% of cancer deaths; almost 1% of all deaths).

Breast cancer is about 100 times as frequent among women as among men, but survival rates are equal in both sexes.

Some breast cancers require the hormones estrogen and progesterone to grow, and have receptors for those hormones. Those cancers are treated with drugs that interfere with those hormones, usually tamoxifen, and with drugs that shut off the production of estrogen in the ovaries or elsewhere; this may damage the ovaries and end fertility. Low-risk, hormone-sensitive breast cancers may be treated with hormone therapy and radiation alone. Breast cancers without hormone receptors, or which have spread to the lymph nodes in the armpits, or which express certain genetic characeristics, are higher-risk, and are treated more aggressively. One standard regimen, popular in the U.S., is cycophosphamide plus doxorubicin (Adriomycin), known as CA; these drugs damage DNA in the cancer, but also in fast-growing normal cells where they cause serious side effects. Sometimes a taxane drug, such as docetaxel, is added, and the regime is then known as CAT; taxane attacks the microtubules in cancer cells. An equivalent treatment, popular in Europe, is cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil (CMF). Monoclonal antibodies, such as trastuzumab, are used for cancer cells that have the HER2 mutation. Radiation is usually added to the surgical bed to control cancer cells that were missed by the surgery, which usually extends survival, although radiation exposure to the heart may cause damage and heart failure in the following years.

Breast cancers are described along four different classification schemes, or groups, each based on different criteria and serving a different purpose:

Pathology - Each tumor is classified by its histological (microscopic anatomy) appearance and other criteria.
Grade of tumor - The histological grade of a tumor is determined by a pathologist under a microscope. A well-differentiated (low grade) tumor resembles normal tissue. A poorly differentiated (high grade) tumor is composed of disorganized cells and, therefore, does not look like normal tissue. Moderately differentiated (intermediate grade) tumors are somewhere in between.
Protein & gene expression status - Currently, all breast cancers should be tested for expression, or detectable effect, of the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and HER2/neu proteins. These tests are usually done by immunohistochemistry and are presented in a pathologist's report. The profile of expression of a given tumor helps predict its prognosis, or outlook, and helps an oncologist choose the most appropriate treatment. More genes and/or proteins may be tested in the future.
Stage of a tumor - The currently accepted staging scheme for breast cancer is the TNM classification. This considers the Tumor itself, whether it has spread to lymph Nodes, and whether there are any Metastases to locations other than the breast and lymph nodes.

Breast cancer is usually, but not always, primarily classified by its histological appearance. Rare variants are defined on the basis of physical exam findings. For example, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), a form of ductal carcinoma or malignant cancer in the ducts, is distinguished from other carcinomas by the inflamed appearance of the affected breast. In the future, some pathologic classifications may be changed.

Signs and symptoms

The first symptom, or subjective sign, of breast cancer is typically a lump that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue. According to the The Merck Manual, more than 80% of breast cancer cases are discovered when the woman feels a lump. According to the American Cancer Society, the first medical sign, or objective indication of breast cancer as detected by a physician, is discovered by mammogram. Lumps found in lymph nodes located in the armpits can also indicate breast cancer.

Indications of breast cancer other than a lump may include changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or spontaneous single-nipple discharge. Pain ("mastodynia") is an unreliable tool in determining the presence or absence of breast cancer, but may be indicative of other breast health issues.

When breast cancer cells invade the dermal lymphatics—small lymph vessels in the skin of the breast—its presentation can resemble skin inflammation and thus is known as inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include pain, swelling, warmth and redness throughout the breast, as well as an orange-peel texture to the skin referred to as peau d'orange.

Another reported symptom complex of breast cancer is Paget's disease of the breast. This syndrome presents as eczematoid skin changes such as redness and mild flaking of the nipple skin. As Paget's advances, symptoms may include tingling, itching, increased sensitivity, burning, and pain. There may also be discharge from the nipple. Approximately half of women diagnosed with Paget's also have a lump in the breast.

Occasionally, breast cancer presents as metastatic disease, that is, cancer that has spread beyond the original organ. Metastatic breast cancer will cause symptoms that depend on the location of metastasis. Common sites of metastasis include bone, liver, lung and brain.[15] Unexplained weight loss can occasionally herald an occult breast cancer, as can symptoms of fevers or chills. Bone or joint pains can sometimes be manifestations of metastatic breast cancer, as can jaundice or neurological symptoms. These symptoms are “non-specific”, meaning they can also be manifestations of many other illnesses.

Most symptoms of breast disorder do not turn out to represent underlying breast cancer. Benign breast diseases such as mastitis and fibroadenoma of the breast are more common causes of breast disorder symptoms. The appearance of a new symptom should be taken seriously by both patients and their doctors, because of the possibility of an underlying breast cancer at almost any age.

Breast Cancer Insight, an informational website and seller of informational e-books, contains a wealth of information on breast cancer: from its causes, to its prevention, to its treatment.

Breast Cancer Insight was created by Dr. Jerry Lang, a medical professional with expert knowledge of breast cancer. Dr. Lang and his colleagues at Breast Cancer Insight started their website because of a shared determination to raise breast cancer awareness among the general populace.

Breast cancer awareness is generally lacking in the broader culture, and this is a major public health issue for women. Though the disease is frequently treatable if detected early, many women still delay needed mammograms, despite decades of persistent urging to the contrary by the media and various federal, state, and local breast cancer awareness organizations. Breast Cancer Insight adds a valuable dose of expert knowledge to the ongoing discussion of breast cancer awareness, breast cancer detection, and breast cancer treatment.

Breast Cancer Insight provides a wide range of breast cancer research materials, all of them vetted by experts in the field. Visitors to the site can read about symptoms of the disease, which include lumps in the breast, and swelling. They can also learn about the disease’s treatment, which generally includes some form of chemotherapy, combined with surgery. Breast Cancer Insight also sells an e-book, entitled “Breast Cancer Surgery – An Overview,” which contains a comprehensive discussion of what patients can expect from typical breast cancer surgery.

Breast Cancer Insight also tackles the problem of breast cancer awareness from the angle of research. Every day, researchers make important new discoveries that relate to breast cancer, but since ordinary people usually find it difficult to keep up with cutting-edge scientific literature, they often remain unaware of these important developments. Breast Cancer Insight keeps abreast of these research developments and summarizes them in easy to read language, to ensure total breast cancer awareness even among those without expert medical knowledge.

Another very important aspect of breast cancer awareness is knowledge of prevention strategies, and here, too, Breast Cancer Insight is active. The site contains a section devoted to explaining, in plain language the many ways of preventing the onset of breast cancer through knowledge of risk factors, proper diet, and so on.

Breast Cancer Insight also offers information on breast cancer support groups, which are a critical component of breast cancer awareness. Anyone who has received a breast cancer diagnosis is bound to be confused and overwhelmed, and the support of a likeminded group can positively affect treatment outcomes.

Breast Cancer Insight also raises breast cancer awareness by enabling visitors to contact the site’s creators directly. This is a great way to get answers to crucial breast cancer questions.

Breast Cancer Insight is a provider of breast cancer information, to promote breast cancer awareness. They also sell e-books with information relating to breast cancer treatment. For more information, visit BreastCancerInsight.

I posted my comment on Amazon:
"I have had many friends with breast cancer – and none of them look like Barbie – a white anorexic blonde with two breasts. To assign a plastic face such as Barbie to such a socially complex health issue, is really disappointing. It homogenizes the breast cancer population and ignores the class dimensions of access to healthcare that increases the chances of optimal treatment. For example, here is a quote from the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.
"The lower rate of utilization of mammography and cervical cancer screening observed for Latinas in the United States has been attributed to cultural, economic, and linguistic barriers they may encounter."
muse.jhu.edu/journals/journal_of_health_care_for_the_poor…

In addition, the physical body of Breast Cancer Barbie is problematic because many survivors have had to get masectomies, and some have chosen to not have their breast(s) reconstructed. It also brings up the gender biases of males as reconstructrion surgeons, in that they assume a woman post-masectomy wants new breasts and may want to use reconstruction as an opportunity to increase their breast size. For example, it is noted that most women don’t reconstruct their breasts post-masectormy and that white women have the highest rates of reconstruction www.medscape.com/viewarticle/522469. In a study that came out in September 2006, they found that women who have reconstruction are 75% more likey to commit suicide www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/09/060920081703.htm. "Figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show a 22% decline in breast reconstruction procedures between 2000 and 2004," dailynews.att.net/cgi-bin/health?e=pub&dt=common&…

I bring up these articles to show that showing "a pair of breasts" for a Breast Cancer Barbie is a highly contentious decision for a company that has been know to create beautiful Barbies and philanthropically has donated money to causes, but has now constructed an actual doll that doesn’t fully represent the heterogeneous breast cancer population is problematic.

And BTW MATTEL – many chemo patients are thin like Barbie NOT BY CHOICE! It’s because of all the raditation and chemo drugs that are pumped into them that causes them to lose their appetite and therefore look thin, emaciated and weak. Being thin like Barbie is NOT A HEALTHY IDEAL for breast cancer patients!

Here is doll on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Barbie-Collector-Pink-Ribbon-Doll/dp/B000E…

My friends adriene who is a breast cancer survivor and documented her process online softservegirl.com/2005/archives.html, wrote this comment about the doll:

"I am a breast cancer survivor and I find this pink dressed, blond "doll" of perfection rather insulting to my female self, the perfect perky boobs, the long blond hair, the body that does not exist on a woman after the ravages of chemotheraphy. I can perfectly understand Mattel wanting to support breast cancer research and donate a portion of proceedes towards funding (and thank you for your generosity), but to do it under the guise of selling a "doll" which does not reflect the community of women who have experienced the challenges of recovery and survivorship…a doll which does not look like a survivor is literally painful and insulting! Why doesn’t this doll have a wig? Why doesn’t she have a breast removed? Why doesn’t she have a bra fitted with a form to mimic the shape of a breast? What is wrong with reality? Why can’t Mattel acknowledge the true nature of this disease and make a doll which comforts, not insults the sensibility of women who have suffered from this disease. I will purchase this doll, just because I am horrified by the product itself. I will disrobe her, and with a saw, cut off her breast so that she will look more like me, a survivor, a woman of pride. I will dismantle the construct of supposed beauty and make this image more like my own – because I am what is woman, not the facade of a false construction."

Breast Cancer Surgery Options – Understanding Your Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer

Overview

Many breast cancers are sensitive to the hormone estrogen. This means that estrogen causes the breast cancer tumor to grow. Such cancer is called estrogen receptor positive cancer or ER positive cancer.

Some women have what’s called HER2-positive breast cancer. HER2 refers to a gene that helps cells grow, divide, and repair themselves. When cells have too many copies of this gene, cells – including cancer cells – grow faster. Experts think that women with HER2-positive breast cancer have a more aggressive disease and a higher risk of recurrence than those who do not have this type.

No one knows the exact causes of breast cancer. Doctors often cannot explain why one woman develops breast cancer and another does not. They do know that bumping, bruising, or touching the breast does not cause cancer. And breast cancer is not contagious. You cannot “catch” it from another person.

Research has shown that women with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop breast cancer.

A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of developing a disease. Studies have found the following risk factors for breast cancer: -

* Age: – The chance of getting breast cancer goes up as a woman gets older. Most cases of breast cancer occur in women over 60. This disease is not common before menopause.

* Personal history of breast cancer: – A woman who had breast cancer in one breast has an increased risk of getting cancer in her other breast.

* Family history: – A woman’s risk of breast cancer is higher if her mother, sister, or daughter had breast cancer. The risk is higher if her family member got breast cancer before age 40.

Having other relatives with breast cancer (in either her mother’s or father’s family) may also increase a woman’s risk.

How is breast cancer diagnosed?

Clinical breast exam : – Your health care provider feels each breast for lumps and looks for other problems. If you have a lump, your doctor will feel its size, shape, and texture. Your doctor will also check to see if it moves easily. Benign lumps often feel different from cancerous ones. Lumps that are soft, smooth, round, and movable are likely to be benign. A hard, oddly shaped lump that feels firmly attached within the breast is more likely to be cancer.

Diagnostic mammogram : – Diagnostic mammograms are x-ray pictures of the breast. They take clearer, more detailed images of areas that look abnormal on a screening mammogram. Doctors use them to learn more about unusual breast changes, such as a lump, pain, thickening, nipple discharge, or change in breast size or shape. Diagnostic mammograms may focus on a specific area of the breast. They may involve special techniques and more views than screening mammograms.

Ultrasound : – An ultrasound device sends out sound waves that people cannot hear. The waves bounce off tissues. A computer uses the echoes to create a picture. Your doctor can view these pictures on a monitor. The pictures may show whether a lump is solid or filled with fluid. A cyst is a fluid-filled sac. Cysts are not cancer. But a solid mass may be cancer. After the test, your doctor can store the pictures on video or print them out. This exam may be used along with a mammogram.

Surgery for Breast Cancer Treatment

How is surgery used in breast cancer treatment?

Surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible is the primary treatment for breast cancer. Today, women have many surgical options and choices. The type of surgery performed depends upon: -

* the size and location of the breast lump or tumor

* the type and stage of the breast cancer (If the cancer has spread within the breast or has spread outside of the breast to the lymph nodes, or to other parts of the body.)

* the size of the breast

* the woman’s preference There are several types of breast surgery. Your physician can explain the benefits and risks of each type, in addition to answering any questions or concerns you may have prior to surgery.
